Everyone knows what pain feels like. Could be a headache, a sports injury, post-surgical discomfort, anal fissures, shingles pain or a chronic condition like arthritis or fibromyalgia. Medications like anti-inflammatories and opiate-derived pain relievers have long been used to alleviate acute and chronic pain and in many cases they are effective. However, their use can often result in unwanted short-term side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, stomach irritation, constipation, and long-term opiate dependence. The problem with oral pain medications are that they are systemically absorbed. That means the drug enters the body through the gastro-intestinal tract, is processed by the liver, and is then disseminated through the entire body. Would it not make more sense to directly target the painful area and reduce the potential for side effects? It is possible!
Sports injuries, joint, arthritic pain topical creams incorporate anti-inflammatories, pain relievers, and anesthetics.
Inflammatory pain creams incorporate muscle relaxants, pain relievers, nerve stabilizers, anesthetics and anti-inflammatories.
Rectal pain ointments incorporate vascular medications and anesthetics.
Shingle pain/post-herpetic neuralgia creams incorporate nerve stabilizers, anti-inflammatories, and pain relievers.
Neuropathic/burning foot pain creams incorporate anti-inflammatories, pain medications, anesthetics, vascular medications.
We make creams for topical use using our highest-quality delivery systems that allow active pharmaceutical ingredients to penetrate the skin and be effective at the area of application. Our experienced technicians use a sophisticated ointment mill to create our topical pain compounds and dispense them in the appropriate device for convenient application. We can compound suppositories for rectal or vaginal use. When optimal treatment requires longer contact time, as with anal fissures, we can make specially shaped suppositories known as “Rectal Rockets” that stay in place to alleviate pain and discomfort while speeding up the healing process. We can also make combination products for oral use known as “Magic Mouthwashes”. These are sometimes prescribed for patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments that can result in mouth sores. They typically contain an antacid, antibiotic, anti-fungal, antihistamine or anesthetic, and a corticosteroid. This combination coats the mouth to treat bacterial or fungal infections, reducing pain, discomfort and inflammation. No matter what we compound at the Canadian Apothecary, we insist on using the best possible ingredients and proven techniques that result in products that we believe are second to none. We can help your doctor or health care practitioner manage your pain, with creative focused solutions.
